Our ancestors were thrust into leadership during the War of 1861-1865. Some became officers straight from the farm and mill, some had professional training. Today’s military leaders are no longer thrust into the challenge of leading the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. Today’s leaders are charged with learning from the lessons of the past before they are given first command. The DC Commandery of MOLLUS recognizes the scholar-officer candidates in Reserve Officer Training Corps.
We also recognize the vital contributions to our understanding of warfare and politics provided by the student of history and historical researcher. Our annual Lincoln-Juarez MOLLUS scholarship is granted to a currently enrolled graduate student for academic studies of Mexican and USA affairs between 1858 through 1865.
LINCOLN-JUAREZ MOLLUS Scholarship
The DC Commandery of MOLLUS sponsors a bi-annual recognition program for graduate students of history or political science at a fully accredited college or university in the District of Columbia (and its Virginia suburbs within a 25 mile radius), the states of Maryland, Delaware or New Jersey. The Lincoln-Juarez MOLLUS scholarship is granted to a currently enrolled graduate student who submits an original academic paper on the subject of Mexican and USA civil or military affairs between 1858 through 1865. The paper must be between 2000 and 3000 words and be sponsored by the graduate student’s advisor.
A three person review team, headed by an Professor Emeritus of Military History will evaluate all submissions.
The successful candidate will receive a recognition certificate, and an invitation to our annual “The Union Preserved” Lunch and General Meeting on the last Saturday of April.
